NSW: Supports attack criticism of aborted foetus research
Supporters of embryonic stemcell research say concerns about the use of aborted foetusesare scaremongering.
Professor BERNIE TUCH (pron: TOOK), the director of Sydney's Prince of Wales Hospitalpancreas transplant unit, has confirmed his team's been using tissue from aborted foetusesto grow stemcells for several months.
Deputy Prime Minister JOHN ANDERSON has condemned the practice and right-to-life groupsdescribe it as chilling.
A patient advocate group that is funding Professor TUCH's research says it didn't knowtissue from aborted foetuses was being used.
However the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation says it strongly supports the researchwhich could help find a cure for diabetes.
The foundation's SHEILA ROYLES says aborted foetuses have been used in Australia foryears and the new concerns are simply scaremongering.
