FARMWORKERS and tenants will be financially compensated if the government - in its drive to speed up land reform - expropriates the land on which they live and work.

Public Works Minister Thoko Didiza told the National Assembly's public works portfolio committee yesterday that the "unregistered rights" of people who have been living on farms "for many years" will be protected if expropriations go ahead in the manner proposed by her department.

This is contained in the Expropriation Bill currently before the committee for consideration.
