FED:OneSteel buy Peculiar Knob iron ore

By Greg Roberts

MELBOURNE, Aug 22 AAP - Steelmaker OneSteel has moved to shore up its position in the
booming iron ore industry by spending $346 million on several mines.

However, Australia's second-biggest steelmaker denied it would exit steelmaking, despite
a record high Australian dollar and raw material costs causing a crisis in the industry,
making it impossible to compete with other countries such as China.

The announcement came on the same day Australia's biggest steelmaker BlueScope spelt
the end of its export business by announcing 1,000 job cuts and the closure of a blast
furnace, following a $1.05 billion full year loss.

OneSteel said on Monday it had bought iron ore assets in South Australia including
Peculiar Knob from WPG Resources for $346 million.

It will also expand its export port facilities at Whyalla in South Australia to 12
million tonnes per annum by the fourth quarter of calendar 2012, from the current capacity
of 6.5 to 7.0 million tonnes, the company says.

The port expansion will cost about $200 million.

It's shares fell 1.5 cents, or 1.12 per cent, to $1.325 by 1136 AEST.

OneSteel's stated strategy was to grow its mining activities, chief executive Geoff
Plummer told reporters in a teleconference on Monday.

WPG Resources recently received SA government approval to develop the highly regarded
Peculiar Knob mine in the Woomera Prohibited Area.

The mine, combined with a strong iron ore market, gave him the confidence to make a
significant investment in the port, Mr Plummer said.

"This is certainly consistent with our stated strategy, which is to invest and grow
iron ore and mining consumables where we can take advantage of the far more positive outlook
in the resources space," he said.

The investment in the Whyalla port would directly and indirectly create 1,000 jobs,
he said, but that is offset by the fact that there was no guarantee the inefficient, lossmaking
steelworks there would stay open.

"If we believed that we couldn't make the steel manufacturing viable then the sorts
of things that we're talking about (shutting down steel manufacturing) would have to be
contemplated," he said.

"We believe it is in the best interests of our shareholders to address the competitive
positions of our steel manufacturing to ensure that those businesses can generate cash
rather than consume a lot of cash in closing them down."

OneSteel announced last week that it had cuts its manufacturing and distribution workforce
by 400 people, while flagging more job cuts.

The company's full-year profit was down 10.9 per cent to $230.3 million, with iron
ore earnings increasing by 57 per cent to $524 million, while the steel-making business
posted a $185 million loss.

Qld: Crying babies unpopular with Aussie travellers

It's no surprise a survey shows Aussie travellers want crying babies and their parents
segregated on overseas flights.

More than two-thousand-400 people responded to the online survey by totaltravel.com
.. and an overwhelming 81 per cent of Australian travellers voted for a separate area
on long-haul flights.

Three per cent said babies don't belong on planes at all .. while the remaining 16
per cent said everyone deserved to be treated equally.

The website's PAUL FISHER says parents should plan for the trip .. taking toys and
games to occupy their children .. while other travellers should use portable music players
to block out noise.

NSW:Hundreds gather to support Villawood men

SYDNEY, April 25 AAP - Hundreds of refugee supporters have gathered outside Sydney's
Villawood Detention Centre to support three detainees protesting on the rooftop.

However, the centre's other detainees are in lock-down, unable to communicate with the crowd.

The supporters on Monday marched the two kilometres from Chester Hill Railway Station,
in Sydney's southwest, to the detention centre to show their solidarity with those on
the other side of the fence.

"Freedom," they chanted, and the cry was returned by the men on the roof.

The three men are in the sixth day of a protest that began on Wednesday, when a riot
involving 100 detainees left nine buildings gutted by fire.

Twenty-two of the alleged rioters were taken to Sydney's Silverwater jail.

Majid Parhizkar, 24, from Iran, and stateless Kurdish men Mehdi and Amir, whose applications
for asylum have been twice rejected, are refusing to come down from the roof.

Majid's brother Hadi, 25, has been camping outside the detention centre since Thursday
and says he is worried about his brother, who has been without food since the protest
began.

"It's not good, he's very hungry and they can't resolve the problem," Hadi told reporters
at the scene.

"It's dangerous for him and I want (him to come down).

"We came to Australia together two years ago and I was accepted after six months and
Majid has not been and we want to know the reason."

His brother could not go back to Iran because he might be killed for converting to
Christianity, Hadi said.

Majid felt as if he had nothing to lose and if he came down from the rooftop he might
be sent to jail or be deported, he said.

The refugee supporters maintained a one-minute silence for Anzac Day, as police and
detention centre security guards closely monitored the area.

Milk discounting by supermarkets will be investigated by a Senate inquiry .. looking
at the effects it'll have on the dairy industry.

Earlier today a group of coalition MPs and dairy industry leaders warned the dollar-per-litre
price being paid by consumers will kill off farmers.

Independent Senator NICK XENOPHON's won the support of the coalition and the Australian
Greens for the inquiry .. which he says will be an opportunity to ask the supermarket
chains whether the price cuts are sustainable.

The Greens have warned the inquiry must deliver for dairy farmers or or risk undermining

VIC:Govt fires response expected on Friday

MELBOURNE, Aug 27 AAP - The Victorian government on Friday is expected to bring down
its official response to the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission's final report.

The report, released on July 31, contained scathing critiques of those in charge when
the Black Saturday fires swept Victoria last year, killing 173 people, on February 7,
2009.

The Victorian government has already supported 59 of the commission's 67 recommendations,
including the appointment of a new Bushfire Services Commissioner to take charge on high
fire risk days. Former Country Fire Authority deputy chief Craig Lapsley was appointed
this month.

But the government is holding out on the remaining proposals, including voluntary buy-outs
of homes in high-risk fire areas and overhauling overhead power lines in bushfire zones.

The government ruled out buy-outs of high-risk homes in the days immediately after
the final report was released.

It has held a series of meetings in bushfire-affected areas and other centres around
the state as part of its promise to consult the community before it makes its final response.

It's expected that Victorian Premier John Brumby will announce the government's response
in Melbourne on Friday.

Fed: Emissions trading threatens LNG jobs: Woodside

By Petrina Berry

BRISBANE, April 28 AAP - The federal government's proposed emissions trading scheme
(ETS) will threaten the creation of thousands of jobs in the liquefied natural gas (LNG)
sector, a major gas company says.

Woodside Energy executive vice-president Robert Cole told the Senate Select Committee
on Climate Policy in Brisbane on Tuesday getting the design of Australia's carbon pollution
reduction scheme right was crucial.

"If we don't get the design right, independent modelling suggests Australia's natural
gas exports would be half the size by 2030," Mr Cole said.

"Australia currently produces around nine per cent of world LNG - we have the opportunity
to triple our LNG exports, but the danger here is we will forgo this opportunity."

He said the scheme as it existed threatened new investments in LNG.

"We are talking ... the loss of opportunity going forward to create jobs and investment,"

Mr Cole said.

"The lost opportunity could be tens of billions of dollars of investment and tens of
thousands of potential jobs.

"What we are looking for is full relief - full permits being allocated until our competitor
countries come on board with an equivalent regime."

Mr Cole said LNG contributed to global greenhouse gas reduction and this should be
recognised by the government in the ETS.

The committee was earlier told the ETS could cut jobs in the beef sector.

Beef processor Teys Brothers said the scheme could add $2.1 million to its Rockhampton
plant expenses, making it unviable and forcing it to shed up to 40 per cent of its workers.

The committee's report is due in May, with the laws expected to be introduced to federal
parliament during budget week and passed by June.

Vic: 11 years jail for father who killed stepdaughter, 3,

MELBOURNE, Dec 6 AAP - A Melbourne man has been jailed for 11 years for killing his
three-year-old stepdaughter in a fit of rage.

Liliana Lam died after Phong Gia Quach pushed her against a bathroom sink at their
house in Noble Park, in southeast Melbourne, on May 3, 2006, after she had vomited on
herself.

Liliana died from a ruptured mesentery - attached to the abdomen wall - causing her
to bleed to death.

Quach, 23, had pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

In sentencing Quach, Victorian Supreme Court judge Bernard Teague said Liliana was
defenceless in her stepfather's hands.

He said the sustained punishment the toddler endured was more insidious than other
forms of assault and fathers and stepfathers must be discouraged from abusing their power.

"The unintended killing of small children in these circumstances is a product of the
children being small and powerless and their fathers or father figures being big and powerful,"

Justice Teague told the court.

Quach was sentenced to 11 years in jail with a non-parole period of eight years.

PERTH, Aug 15 AAP - An eight-year-old girl was critically injured when run over by
a teenage thief as he stole her mother's car from the driveway of a West Australian home.

Police say the mother had left her daughter and one-year-old son in the car, with the
engine running, in the driveway of their grandparents' house in Esperance yesterday.

She had been checking the house was secure, while the grandparents were away on holiday.

While the woman was away from the car, police media spokesman Ian Hasleby said a 19-year-old
man got into the vehicle and reversed it out of the driveway at high speed.

"A short distance from the house, the eight-year-old was thrown out of the vehicle,"

Mr Hasleby said.

It was not clear if the child had fallen, jumped or been pushed, he said.

But she was run over as the man continued to reverse the car down the street, until
it hit a tree.

The driver tried to run away, but was intercepted by an onlooker.

Both children were taken to hospital in Esperance, before the girl was airlifted to

Fed: Kopassus training resumes

CANBERRA, Dec 11 AAP - Australian and Indonesian special forces will train together
for the first time in seven years when the government lifts a ban on cooperation between
the elite troops.

Australia cut ties with Indonesia's Kopassus unit after militia trained by the troops
killed East Timorese in the lead up to the country's independence in 1999.

The unit will train with Australia's Special Air Service Regiment on a joint counter-terrorism
exercise, called Dawn Kookaburra, in Perth early next year.

Despite past human rights abuses by the Indonesian unit, Defence Minister Robert Hill
defended the decision to resume cooperation, saying it could help save Australian lives.

"In this era of heightened terrorist threats it is in Australia's interests to engage
with regional special forces, such as Kopassus, to safeguard the lives of Australians
and Australian interests abroad," he said in a statement.

"The bombings in Bali in October 2005 further highlighted the need for regional countries
to work together in combating this common threat.

"Kopassus Unit 81 has the most effective capability to respond to a counter hijack
or hostage recovery threat in Indonesia.

"In the event of a terrorist incident, the safety of Australians in Indonesia could
well rest on the effective cooperation between TNI (Indonesia's armed forces) and the
ADF (Australian Defence Force)."

Kopassus Unit 81 is the Indonesian special forces' counter-terrorism team.

Exercise Dawn Kookaburra will focus on resolving hijack and hostage situations.

It will be the first exercise of its kind involving the two countries since 1997.

Australian defence ties with Indonesia grew through the 1980s and 1990s, mainly between
Kopassus and the Perth-based SAS.

But they ended abruptly in 1999 when Australia led the international mission to East Timor.

Any links with Kopassus are controversial because of long-running accusations of human
rights violations in East Timor and the Indonesian provinces of Aceh and West Papua.

A report released a year ago found Kopassus had not reformed and urged the ADF not to renew ties.

The paper, by the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre at the Australian National University,
said much of Kopassus' role would continue to be viewed in Australia and elsewhere as
profoundly inappropriate, morally and legally unacceptable.

Intertainer files antitrust lawsuit against AOL, Sony and Vivendi.(Brief Article)

TV MEETS THE WEB-(C)2002 Van Dusseldorp & Partners - http://www.vandusseldorp.com/

Movie-on-demand supplier Intertainer has filed an anti-trust lawsuit against Sony, AOL Time Warner and Vivendi Universal, alleging price-fixing and conspiracy.

The lawsuit, filed in California says the three have conspired to hinder Intertainer's busines of supplying movies by broadband. It goes on to allege that a group boycott was instituted, stopping the licencing of their movies to Intertainer, so they could launch their own service in competition.

In a statement, Intertainer CEO Jonathan Taplin said that the studios trying to "eliminate consumer choice, produce higher prices, reduce output and lower quality services that would prevail in a competitive market."

Further allegations stated in the suit are that AOL pressured Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema into abandoning deals with Intertainer. Sony is also accused of intellectual infringement, by allegedly using its board-member status to compile insider information for its own Movielink project.

The allegations stem from the fact that Hollywood is terrified of losing control of their products to the digital age. The prevailing view is that unless they fully control the digital distribution of their products, new technologies may let internet users to distribute films and the like for free. The industry's fears have been exacerbated by the music business' protracted battles with Napster and KaZaa.

The main reaction from Hollywood has been the lobbying of lawmakers to pass laws aimed at forcing technology makers to install copy-protection devices in all kinds of hardware. A Department of Commerce report released today disagreed with this stance, stating that it was the responsibility of the industry, not government, to deal with content protection. Sir Brian bows out with blast at rivals' bonuses.

SIR Brian Pitman delivered a blast against multimillion pound 'deal bonuses' for rival bank chiefs, as he stepped down yesterday as chairman of Lloyds TSB.

Arch-predator Sir Brian slammed the payments, including [pound]2.5m to Royal Bank of Scotland bosses for taking over NatWest.

'I never got any deal-related bonuses and I didn't want any. People should be paid for long-term achievements, not for doing a deal,' he said.

The Lloyds veteran joins a chorus of disapproval of the controversial deal-related payments, including [pound]5m to Schroders chairman Sir Win Bischoff and [pound]649,000 to United Business Media chief executive Lord Hollick.

After leaving Lloyds, the evergreen Sir Brian, 69, is becoming chairman of Internet insurance business Acturis.

He also plans to take a post as a senior adviser to a US investment bank.

That may point to JP Morgan or Merrill Lynch, advisers to Lloyds.

He sits on the boards of Carphone Warehouse, Carlton Communications, Next and Tomkins. Sir Brian, succeeded at Lloyds by Maarten van den Bergh, is widely hailed as the best banker of his generation.

Under his stewardship Lloyds TSB was transformed from a debt-ridden disaster in the Latin American crisis of the 1980s into the UK's best-regarded clearing bank.

Since he took over as chief executive in 1983, its market value has grown from [pound]1bn to nearly [pound]40bn, though its halo, and share price, have recently slipped.

Sir Brian moved up to chairman in 1997 but his larger-than-life personality continued to overshadow the new chief executive, Peter Ellwood.

His achievements include the takeovers of Cheltenham & Gloucester, TSB and Scottish Widows.

But he claims he is not disappointed that Lloyds TSB's [pound]19bn bid for Abbey National has been referred to the Competition Commission, depriving him of one last big deal.

POMFRET, CT, - Fiberoptics Technology Inc. (FTI) announces completion of a high power LED light source project for large active diameter industrial applications.

The patent pending device will be certified by ETL under the UL lab/industrial protocol, and will be CE certified. The unit is being manufactured at the company's new electronic assembly facility in Pomfret CT. FTI began designing and manufacturing light source products in 2004.

Using a very simple but effective coupling strategy, FTI engineers can couple the light from a monocolor matrix die into a fiber optic cable at high efficiency rates. The resulting output exceeds the power of a similarly coupled EKE halogen lamp in active diameter sizes up to 12mm.

The product offers true color balance, excellent uniformity, improved electrical efficiency, with the same footprint as existing halogen lighting technology, Users can replace older halogen technology without altering existing systems or components.

"After nearly 4 years of research and development, our team has made a second important breakthrough; an LED source capable of generating more photonic output than an EKE lamp at the full 12mm spot size. This will enable our customers to update their industrial process and vision systems with a long lived, bright, and dependable source, eliminating down time associated with lamp change. I believe the introduction of this unit signals the beginning of the end for the traditional 150W Quartz Halogen source.", and more importantly, a new era of importance for fiber based illumination systems.", said Walt Seagrave, the company's Product Manager responsible for the product's development.

FTI's LED light technology provides the following features:

o More power than an EKE lamp within a 12mm focal spot.

o Long life (50000) hours - no lamp to change.

o Stable output throughout the usable life.
